Installing Transit-Flor® Products

• What are the installation instructions for R.C.A. Rubber products?
A recommended installation guide can be found in our Technical Resource Center.

• What type of adhesive to use?
Small repair jobs on a vehicle can use R.C.A. Rubber's #56 latex adhesive. Most vehicle manufacturers utilize a spray on contact adhesive purchased from various manufacturers. For Rail installations, we recommend the use of R.C.A. Rubber's #5 epoxy, best for use on ply-metal sub-floor. If you are an OEM and would like to know if your adhesive will work with Transit-Flor® flooring, contact a Sales Representative. We will be happy to test and evaluate the adhesive.

Product Selection and Applications

• We are in the process of restoring a vehicle but the vehicle manufacturer is no longer in business. Can I still get the proper flooring and tread parts for the vehicle?
In most cases, yes! Because it will be difficult to determine exact part numbers for the flooring products you will need, you will need to provide us with specific measurements for each flooring part (treads, entrance plates, center aisle flooring, under-seat flooring). As mentioned in the step-by-step process above, you should request a sample kit and brochure to better determine your needs. After you have determined what type and color of flooring you will need, give us a call and we will walk through the process to best determine the specific products your refurbishment will need.

• Do you cut step treads to size?
Yes, if drawing is furnished or OEM part number is specified.

• Why is ribbed design recommended for aisle, entrance area and steps?
Our ribbed configuration is designed to allow a place for water and elements to channel and provide an even safer walking surface (top of ribs) in the presence of wet conditions. Steps are manufactured with ribbed design running transversely in the vehicle to allow elements to drain out the doorway.

• What are the most popular Transit-Flor® colors?
On school buses, black is the color most often used. For other transit vehicles, our charcoal grey with cream marbling (#766) matches well with many of standard interior color schemes and is the most popular choice.

• Does the Transit-Flor® line carry solid colors?
Only in black. We do have, however, a line of granite colors that give a varied appearance from our marbleized colors. Our granite design is a solid color with small particles of contrasting color providing a unique aesthetic appeal.

• Does R.C.A. provide assistance in floor layout with regard to type of product to utilize in a vehicle?
Yes, we have technical service experts with a combined 37+ years of transit floor experience that can work with manufacturers or end users on the best utilization of our products in the layout of your vehicle.

• What is the maximum width of Transit-Flor® flooring?
All colors can be made up to 46" wide. Our solid black and marbleized colors can be made up to 48" wide.

• I want to refurbish a transit vehicle, how should I start?
First, we recommend you request a sample kit and brochure to assist you in identifying the color, sizes, features and specifications of our product.

Second, determine if your project will require the replacement of the sub-floor in your vehicle and, if so, identify the material to be used for the sub-floor?s construction. This information is crucial to determining a suitable adhesive to bond our flooring to the sub-floor. If the subfloor of the vehicle will not be replaced, it must be thoroughly cleaned, scraping off any old adhesive and filling in any imperfections with a suitable latex floor patch and sanded.

Third, identify as many parts as possible from the vehicle manufacturer, particularly those parts associated with flooring and tread material. For example, center aisle ribbed flooring, under-seat smooth flooring, the entrance plate area beside the driver?s seat and step treads. All of these components have assigned part numbers and vary from vehicle manufacturer to vehicle manufacturer.

Fourth, request an account set-up with our credit department (for traditional invoicing) or prepare your order request with a credit card.

Fifth, submit a quote request.

Finally, submit your order.

• Can I still get the same color flooring as was originally placed in my vehicle?
Yes! We can re-create any retired color as well as color match from a sample piece of your vehicle. Minimum order quantities are required for custom and retired colors. Please contact a customer service representative for more details.

Maintenance and Cleaning

• How can I remove stains from Transit-Flor® products?
We have a set of stain removal instructions that can help you determine the best method to remove a stain located in our technical resource center. This document also lists a few common staining agents found on transit vehicles, and the recommended cleaning solution and process to remove them.

• How should I clean R.C.A. Rubber products?
A copy of our recommended maintenance guide and stain removal instructions can be found in our Technical Resource Center.

We recommend using a non-ionic detergent cleaning, following the cleaner manufacturer?s recommended cleaning procedure. Then vacuum, mop or squeeze the detergent solution from the floor before rinsing the surface with a solution of 10% chlorine bleach (or equivalent) and water.
